OFM News Bulletin Compiler and Reader

OFM radio station requires the services of radio news bulletin compilers and readers, proficient in writing and reading bulletins in Afrikaans and English for a commercial radio format. The successful candidates will form part of OFM’s newsroom in the Bloemfontein office and report to the news editor as well as programme manager. These positions will be contracted to weekday and weekend shifts as required by the programming schedule and communicated with potential candidates. The ideal candidates have an exceptional grasp of current affairs, general knowledge and understanding of OFM’s broadcast footprint, superb broadcast news writing skills and eloquent delivery, can follow direction, work well independently, set the daily news agenda and lead the news team when required.

 

Ideal candidates should possess the following:

 

1. Qualifications and Experience:

• A relevant degree or diploma in journalism, communications, or media studies.
• Proven experience in compiling and reading news bulletins.
• Exceptional proficiency in writing and delivering news in both Afrikaans and English.
• Strong knowledge of current affairs, especially within OFM’s broadcast footprint (Free State, North West, Northern Cape).
• Previous experience working in a newsroom environment or in live broadcasting is advantageous.

2. Technical and Professional Skills:

 

• Excellent news writing skills tailored to a commercial radio format—concise, engaging, and audience-appropriate.
• Clear, articulate, and professional on-air delivery with the ability to adjust tone as needed.
• Ability to source, verify, and prioritise breaking news stories independently.
• Ability to edit audio clips.
• Competence in using newsroom and broadcasting software
• Strong editorial judgement and the ability to set the daily news agenda and lead the news team when required.

3. Personal Attributes:

 

• Bilingual fluency (Afrikaans and English) with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Attention to detail and accuracy under pressure.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with the news editor and programme manager.
• Adaptability to handle weekday and weekend shifts based on the programming schedule.
• Strong organisational and time management skills to meet tight deadlines.
• Leadership potential to guide the team when necessary.

4. Practical Requirements:

 

• Availability to work flexible hours, including weekday and weekend shifts.
• Must be based in Bloemfontein or willing to relocate.
• A clear speaking voice suitable for on-air presentation.
• Access to reliable transport for early/late shifts if required.

 

5. Additional Advantageous Attributes:

 

• Knowledge of media law and broadcast regulations (e.g., BCCSA compliance).
• Familiarity with OFM’s audience and understanding their news interests.
• Previous experience in live broadcasting and breaking news situations.

• ’n Verwante graad of diploma in joernalistiek, kommunikasie of mediastudies.
• Bewese ervaring in die samestelling en lees van nuusbulletins.
• Uitsonderlike vaardigheid in die skryf en lewering van nuus in beide Afrikaans en Engels.
• Goeie kennis van aktuele sake, veral binne OFM se uitsaaigebied (Vrystaat, Noordwes, Noord-Kaap).
• Vorige ervaring in ’n nuuskantoor of regstreekse uitsaai-omgewing is voordelig.

2. Tegniese en Professionele Vaardighede:

• Uitstekende nuusskryfvaardighede aangepas vir ’n kommersiële radioformaat—bondig, boeiend en geskik vir die teikengehoor.
• Duidelike, artikuleerde en professionele stemlewering met die vermoë om toon te pas soos benodig.
• Die vermoë om nuusstories onafhanklik te vind, te verifieer en te prioritiseer.
• Vaardigheid om klankgrepe te redigeer.
• Bekwaamheid in die gebruik van nuuskantoor- en uitsaaisagteware.
